7 Essential Supplies to Get Before Adopting a Cat

So, you’re adopting a cat! Before you visit the shelter, make sure to get these cat essentials: food, toys, and a litter box.

Adopting a cat is an exciting step, whether it's your first time or not. Here's a checklist of essential items you need before teaching your cat any Instagram-worthy tricks.

We spoke with Brett Kruger, the feline team manager at Indyhumane shelter, to get pro tips on essential cat gear. Here are the seven must-haves:

  1. Cat Carrier: A top-loading carrier is best for easy loading and unloading, helping reduce stress for both you and your cat.

  2. Litter Boxes: You’ll need one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Place them in different locations and opt for a large plastic tub for easy maintenance.

  3. Food & Water Bowls: Cats prefer separate food and water bowls. A water fountain bowl can mimic a natural stream, encouraging your cat to drink more.

  4. Cat Trees, Scratchers, and Toys: Provide a tall, sturdy cat tree for climbing, and a tall scratcher to satisfy scratching instincts. Engage your cat with various toys, like balls, teasers, and catnip toys.

  5. Cat Beds: Choose an enclosed bed for a cozy, secure nap spot. Observe your cat’s sleeping habits to pick the best type of bed.

  6. Collars: Even indoor cats should wear breakaway collars with ID tags. This ensures they can be easily identified if they escape.

  7. Cat Food: Pick food suitable for your cat’s life stage. Consult the shelter or vet for recommendations, and consider mixing dry and canned food for variety.

With these essentials, you’re ready to welcome your new feline friend!

Remember, a happy cat makes for a happy home.
